1/7/2008Cost of New City Primary Goes up £4m

THE price of a new Glasgow primary school campus has soared by £4million - more than half the original cost.
Councillors are expected to accept an £11.5million tender for a joint primary and pre-five campus in Govan.
It will be built on the site of the former St Gerard's Secondary to take three primaries - Hills Trust, Copeland, and St Saviour's RC - and Broomloan nursery.
The original estimate for the buildings was £7.4m, but councillors will be told the price is now £11.4m.
Officials blame the increase on a range of factors, including the discovery of dangerous brown asbestos in the old St Gerard's building, which had to be demolished.
Inflation between the end of 2006 and this summer added a further £1m.
The project is part of phase four of the council's pre-12 strategy, which has resulted in its primary and nursery schools being revamped.
So far, 18 new schools or school campuses have been built across the city and a further 16, including the Govan campus, are scheduled as part of phase four.
Gordon Matheson, the council's executive member for education, said: "It has been a particularly challenging design process because of the complexity of the site."
Following a public ballot, the new school, which will open in January 2010, will be called Riverside Primary, St Saviour's Primary and Broomloan Nursery.
Councillors are also expected to accept the results of public ballots for four other new schools.
Easthall, Provanhall and Wellhouse primaries will amalgamate and join Barlanark Autism Unit in a new building in October. It will be called Aultmore Park Primary and Aultmore Park Autism Unit.
Easthall Nursery, Easthurst Nursery and Provanhall nursery class will join in October to be Beechwood Nursery School.
Arden and Carnwadric primaries will join the Jimmy Dunnachie Family Learning Centre in the autumn to be Ashpark Primary.
Drumoyne, Elder Park and Greenfield primaries will merge with the Govan Family Centre in November 2009 to be Pirie Park Primary.
